EFT Tapping: How It Works and What a Session Looks Like

EFT — Emotional Freedom Techniques — is the one that looks strangest from the outside. You tap lightly on a series of points on the face and upper body while speaking about something that is bothering you. People are often quietly sceptical for the first few minutes, which is entirely reasonable.

What it is for

Difficult experiences do not only live in memory. They are held in the body too — in the tightening of the chest when a particular subject comes up, in the jaw, in the shallow breath. You can understand a situation completely and still have your body respond as though nothing has changed.

EFT works at that layer. Rather than analysing the situation further, it works with the physical charge attached to it.

What happens in a session

We start by naming something specific. Specificity matters — "I feel anxious" is harder to work with than "I get a knot in my stomach every time I have to speak up in the Monday meeting."

Then we tap through a sequence of points while you voice the thing as it actually is, rather than as you think you should feel about it. That part surprises people. You are not affirming that everything is fine. You are saying the uncomfortable thing plainly, which for many people is the first time they have done so out loud.

We check in as we go — how strong does it feel now, has the sensation moved, has anything else surfaced. Often something else does. That is usually where the useful work is.

What people notice

  • The physical sensation easing, sometimes noticeably within a few rounds
  • Yawning, sighing, or a sudden deeper breath — very common
  • An unrelated memory arriving, which is often the actual root
  • The situation feeling further away, or less loaded, when they return to it
  • A calmer nervous system generally, which is why it works well before Reiki

Matrix Reimprinting

Matrix Reimprinting takes the same technique deeper. Rather than working only with how something feels now, it works with the earlier memory the response is anchored to — gently, and at a subconscious level. It suits situations where the present-day reaction is clearly out of proportion to the present-day trigger.

Being honest about it

EFT is a complementary practice. It is not treatment and it is not a substitute for therapy, particularly where trauma is significant. What it does do well is give the body a way to discharge some of what it has been carrying, in a session where nothing is forced and you set the pace.

In practice I most often use it at the start of a session, to settle the nervous system before deeper work — which is exactly how the Reiki & EFT Energy Reset is structured.

Energy healing is a complementary practice and does not replace medical or psychological care. If you are experiencing significant physical or mental health concerns, please speak with your GP or a qualified healthcare professional.
