What Is Reiki? A Gentle Introduction for Your First Session
Reiki is one of those words that turns up everywhere and gets explained almost nowhere. People arrive at a first session having read three different descriptions and formed no clear picture at all. So here is the version I give when someone asks me directly.
The short answer
Reiki is a gentle, hands-on (or hands-just-above) practice where the practitioner supports the body into a deeply rested state. You stay fully clothed. You lie down. Nothing is manipulated, adjusted or pressed. For most of the session you are simply still.
That stillness is doing more than it looks like it is doing. Most of us spend our days with the nervous system running slightly ahead of us — braced, scanning, planning. A session is one of the few settings where the body is given permission to stop, and where nothing is being asked of it.
What actually happens in the room
We begin with a conversation. Not a long one, but enough for me to understand what has been present for you lately and what you are hoping for. Some people arrive with something specific. Many arrive saying "I just feel off, and I can’t explain why." Both are entirely workable starting points.
Then you settle on the treatment table, usually under a blanket, often with music playing softly. I work through a sequence of hand positions, resting my hands lightly on or just above you. You do not have to do anything. You do not have to empty your mind, breathe in any particular way, or believe anything in particular for the session to be worthwhile.
We finish with a few minutes of grounding and a short conversation about anything that came up.
What it tends to feel like
This varies more than people expect, and none of it is a sign you are doing it wrong. Common experiences include:
- Warmth or a gentle tingling where my hands are resting
- Heaviness, as though you have sunk further into the table than you thought possible
- Drifting in and out of sleep — genuinely very common, and completely fine
- Emotion surfacing without an obvious story attached to it
- Very little at all during the session, followed by unusually deep sleep that night
That last one catches people out. A quiet session is not an unsuccessful one.
Who tends to book a first session
In my experience, people rarely arrive because they are curious about Reiki in the abstract. They arrive because something has been building. A long stretch of stress. A period of poor sleep. A big life change they are still catching up with emotionally. Or simply the sense of being stretched thin in a way that a weekend off no longer fixes.
Reiki is not a substitute for the support any of those may genuinely need. It sits alongside it — a space to slow down and be looked after for an hour, with no expectation attached.
How to prepare
- Wear something you can lie down in comfortably.
- Eat something beforehand, so you are not lying there hungry.
- Give yourself a little room afterwards if you can. Going straight into a demanding meeting is possible, but it is nicer not to.
- Drink water afterwards, and expect to sleep well.
- Come as you are. You do not need to arrive calm, prepared, or with your thoughts in order.
A note on belief
People sometimes tell me, slightly apologetically, that they are not sure they believe in any of it. That is genuinely fine. You are not required to hold a particular view for an hour of deep rest in a quiet room to be worth having. Come sceptical. See what you notice.
If you are considering it
The Reiki & EFT Energy Reset combines this work with gentle EFT tapping, which helps settle the nervous system before the Reiki portion begins. If you would rather talk it through first, a complimentary discovery call is a short, no-pressure conversation to work out whether it feels like the right fit.
Energy healing is a complementary practice and does not replace medical or psychological care. If you are experiencing significant physical or mental health concerns, please speak with your GP or a qualified healthcare professional.
